![]() A number of eminent historians concerned themselves with particular periods of German history. Henty was the most notable of these authors, but there were many others. Other writers wrote historical fiction set in such crucial periods of German history as the Thirty Years War, the reign of Frederick the Great and the Franco-Prussian War. This was followed by The Boyhood of Martin Luther by Henry Mayhew (London and Edinburgh: Gall & Inglis, c. (’A Lady Of England’), produced The Life of Luther (London: The Book Society, 1873). ![]() Maria Elizabeth Budden wrote Hofer, the Tyrolese (London: John Harris and Sons, 1824) and Charlotte Maria Tucker, who wrote under the initials A.L.O.E. Some of these deal with important historical figures. 1Alongside the many German children’s books that were translated into English during the nineteenth century we find a variety of books by British authors that presented aspects of German history to children and young people.
